Where it came from
Well documented
Bobby Fischer, world champion from 1972, came to believe that chess was being decided by home preparation rather than over the board. On June 19, 1996, in Buenos Aires, he announced his solution: shuffle the pieces on the back rank.
Random setups had been tried before, but Fischer’s rules kept what makes chess feel like chess. The bishops stay on opposite colours, the king stands between the rooks, and both players can still castle. Those constraints allow exactly 960 starting positions.
The variant has become the most respected alternative to standard chess. FIDE has published official rules, held world championships, and since 2024 top players have also competed in it under the Freestyle Chess name.
Why it was made: To end the dominance of memorized opening theory and reward understanding from the first move.
How it differs from chess
- The shuffleWhite’s pieces behind the pawns are arranged randomly, with the bishops on opposite-coloured squares and the king somewhere between the two rooks. Black mirrors White exactly.
- 960 positionsEvery legal setup has a number from 0 to 959. Position 518 is the standard chess setup.
- CastlingAfter castling, king and rook finish on the same squares as in standard chess: kingside on g1 and f1, queenside on c1 and d1. The squares between must be empty, and the king may not be in check or pass through an attacked square.
- Everything elseAll other rules, including checkmate, en passant and promotion, are unchanged.
Your first game
- Look for undefended pawns before you move. Some setups leave a pawn attacked from the start.
- Ask where each piece wants to go, then develop with that plan. Usual opening habits may not fit.
- Castling is still valuable, but check which side your king is safer on in this setup.
