Where it came from

Nobody knows who invented it

Bughouse is a club game with no known inventor. It became a fixture at chess clubs and on internet chess servers, usually played at fast time controls with lots of talking between partners.

Partners play opposite colours on two boards. Pieces flow between the boards, so a capture on one board can decide the game on the other. Crazyhouse is its one-board form.

Why it was made: Social, fast and noisy: chess as a team sport.

How it differs from chess

  • TeamsTwo teams of two. Partners sit side by side and play opposite colours.
  • Passing piecesWhen you capture a piece, you hand it to your partner, who may drop it on their board instead of moving.
  • WinningThe match ends as soon as either game is won, by checkmate or on time.

Questions

Can I play Bughouse against the bot here?
Not yet. Bughouse needs four players. Try Crazyhouse, which uses the same drop rules on one board.
