A pin with a price

The idea

Black’s bishop pins the knight on f3 to the queen on d1. Moving the knight would expose the queen, so the pin puts pressure on White’s control of the centre.

What follows

Morphy plays 4. dxe5. After 4...Bxf3 5. Qxf3, White has the bishop pair and an active queen. Black has spent two bishop moves to exchange for a knight.

Remember

A pin is useful when it helps your development or creates a concrete threat. Consider what your opponent gains when you exchange the pinning piece.

The queen joins the attack

The idea

Qxf3 recaptures the bishop and puts the queen on the f-file, looking toward f7. White’s bishops are still at home, but both now have open diagonals available.

Building the pressure

After 5...dxe5, Morphy develops with 6. Bc4. The queen and bishop then both target f7, a pawn defended only by the black king in the starting position.

Remember

Early queen activity works best when it cooperates with developing pieces. Find a shared target for your attackers.

A double threat

The idea

Morphy’s queen attacks b7 along the b-file and f7 along the diagonal. The bishop on c4 also targets f7, putting pressure on the king’s defenses.

Black’s response

7...Qe7 protects f7, but places the queen in front of the f8 bishop. Black still needs time to develop and castle.

Why not grab the pawn?

Morphy continues with 8. Nc3 instead of taking b7. Bringing another piece into play keeps his attack moving while Black struggles to coordinate.

Remember

When you have a lead in development, bring more pieces into the attack before chasing material.

Open the road to the king

The idea

Black’s ...b5 attacks the bishop on c4. Instead of retreating, Morphy captures the pawn with his knight, offering a piece to open a diagonal toward e8.

The continuation

After 10...cxb5 11. Bxb5+, the bishop gives check along b5–c6–d7–e8. Black answers ...Nbd7, but that knight is now pinned to the king.

Remember

Before retreating an attacked piece, look for forcing moves. Opening a line can be worth more than the material you give up.

Castle into the attack

Two jobs, one move

Castling queenside moves the king to c1 and brings the a1 rook straight to d1. The rook now faces the knight on d7 along an open file.

Count the defenders

The bishop on b5 pins the d7 knight to the king. Black plays ...Rd8 to add a defender, but Morphy can bring his second rook to the same file.

Remember

Development is about useful squares. A rook placed on an open file can enter the attack immediately.

Trade material for momentum

Remove a defender

Rxd7 removes the pinned knight. Morphy gives up a rook, but Black’s reply ...Rxd7 brings the defending rook onto the same vulnerable square.

Bring the last piece

14. Rd1 brings White’s remaining rook to the open file. After ...Qe6, 15. Bxd7+ Nxd7 leaves Black’s knight on d7 and the king trapped on e8.

A sacrifice needs a continuation. Follow each capture and check before deciding whether your remaining pieces can finish the attack.

The forcing move

Qb8+ checks along the eighth rank. Black’s king has no safe escape and the knight on d7 must capture the queen with ...Nxb8.

The point of the sacrifice

The knight’s departure clears the d-file. Morphy’s rook can now travel from d1 to d8, where the bishop on g5 protects it.

Remember

Look beyond the value of the sacrificed piece. Deflecting one defender can open a decisive route to the king.

Every piece has a purpose

Why it is mate

The rook on d8 checks the king on e8 and is protected by the bishop on g5. The king cannot capture the rook, and Black cannot block the adjacent check.

No escape

The rook covers d7 and f8, the bishop covers e7, and Black’s own queen on e6 and pawn on f7 restrict the position. There is no legal way to escape the check.

Remember

The combination worked because White developed quickly, opened lines, and coordinated the rook and bishops against an uncastled king.
